Ryan McGinley’s - who I’m sure needs no introduction - new book arrived today.
As has been discussed at length elsewhere, it marks a new direction in his work. Instead of photographing young, good looking, carefree, naked people outside, he photographed young, good looking, carefree, naked people in his studio.
Well, perhaps there’s a bit more to it than that, but while I could dwell on the technical aspects - how he used a bright yellow backdrop instead of white as you might expect, the amount of post processing that was or wasn’t done, the lighting - or I could dwell on the more artistic aspects to the work, the concept, the dedication to the project (literally thousands of shots were taken for this body of work) etc…
… what I really want to say can be distilled down to three points:
1) It’s Ryan
2) The book is really, really well printed and it’s going to look great on the shelf next to Moonmilk
3) Never mind how he does it, these photographs are beautiful.
