Preston Bus Station - Jamie Hawkesworth / Adam Murray / Robert Parkinson
I love this new book/newspaper from PPP Books, and not just because it’s printed by Newspaper Club (although that’s another great reason to love it).
The website states:
“This publication is about arguably the most iconic building in Preston, the Bus Station. Over a weekend in August we set up a project space in a disused shop in the bus station and produced a photographic document of the building and the people that use it.”
Printing in this format has provided the guys with a great deal of choice when it comes to the size of each image. Large - almost full page - images sit alongside much smaller images, but even the very smallest size image is bigger than you would normally get in a book thanks to the sheer size of the newspaper.
Personally I think the format is a welcome change from the usual PPP publications and allows us to enjoy the work in a much larger size than normal.
You might not think of a bus station as being a good location for beautiful portraits, but the cover in particular demonstrates that soft light can be found anywhere - you just need to know where to look.
Overall I think that the project is very interesting and would like to see how other photographers make use of the public spaces around them. Another great addition to the newsprint section of my collection.
