125 magazine →
Just a quick note to say that the latest issue of 125 magazine arrived today. If you live in the UK you should seriously consider buying this thing. It’s more of a book than a magazine - about an inch thick, hardly any adverts, tons of great photos.
You can flick through the issue online here : http://www.125magazine.com/index.php?p_id=100&img_issue_id=38
Sometimes the stuff they...

Ye Rin Mok - Ichikawadaimon →
Ye Rin Mok’s Ichikawadaimon arrived this morning. Wow. What a great book.
Her simple statement about this book is as follows: “i took these photos when i was traveling japan last september. i stayed in a rural town called ichikawadaimon for few days and walked around and took these pictures“
A very casual description for a very casual set of images, which nevertheless are an absolute joy...

Jeff Luker - You are nowhere →
Jeff Luker’s new book ‘You are nowhere’ arrived today. I say book, but this is almost zine-like in production and size. It’s a tad bigger than most zines and printed onto better quality stock.
It contains 18 images, most of which are two page spreads. The description of the book on the publisher’s website is as follows:
During one of his travels, feeling especially...

Gemini 002 →
Gemini #002 by Patrick Moore is a small, black and white, zine/mag containing some outstanding portraits. I particularly liked the guy on the bike (someone will now tell me this is someone famous) but there’s really nothing bad in here. There’s also a shot of a girl about 3 pages in which is really, really nice.
I wish I’d got #001 now, but it doesn’t seem to be available...

Lina Scheynius - book 02 →
This arrived today, following a pre-Christmas recommendation from another photographer, and subsequent order placed by me.
My main observation is that the book is “better than I expected” with some exceptional, stand out images.
On the whole, it’s mainly the kind of 35mm snapshot-y photography you can find all over the place (and particularly in zines/self-published books) but...

Unseen UK →
Unseen UK, an old-ish (but good) book arrived today. I’ve wanted this for … years … literally. For some reason I had never got round to buying a copy, although I’d flicked through it in shops from time to time.
Earlier this year you could buy it for £7.99 from Amazon, using the above link. Today … sold out pretty much everywhere.
I’m sure used copies will...

David Stewart - promotional package →
I highly recommend visiting David’s website. It displays a delightful mix of wit and imagination throughout. I enjoyed clicking into the various sections just to see what joke he would use to introduce the section (Fogeys is my favourite) or what presentation technique he would use within it.
He was kind enough to send me his promotional pack. It’s pretty hard to find information...

Nicolas Poillot - Monologue →
Nicolas Poillot’s zine ‘Monologue’ arrived in the post today. It’s a small (15cm x 21cm), 46 page, black and white zine with a blue card cover. It’s hard to find information about this online. I bought it simply because it was the only title in this series (I think I’m right in calling it a series) from JSBJ which wasn’t sold out.
(I was actually after...

Ben Rayner zines →
Today I received a couple of zines from Ben Rayner - California Screaming and Don’t Tread on Me.
Not only are these a bargain (£11 for both, delivered to the UK) but the production quality is superb - certainly a notch above typical zines.
Of the two, I prefer California Screaming, mainly due to the fact that it has a consistent, overriding theme (‘a collection of photographs taken...

Riley and His Story →
After Alec Soth declared this to be his book of the year I decided to track down a copy for myself. At the time of writing it is readily available from both the publisher and Amazon, but as Alec notes, it is likely to go out of print very soon.
This book isn’t just about war. It’s about the effect war has on people. It’s about the steps people take to survive war. It’s...

2nd Tour, Hope I Don't Die →
This week I received two photobooks dealing with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Vietnam of the noughties? Perhaps. A golden opportunity for commercial photobook publishers? Maybe so, but if Vietnam was the first war in which photography played a pivotal role, the last decade has seen the first in which speedy communication (the Internet, text messages, Twitter etc) had a part to play, if...
The beginning
I collect photography books - and so should you.
I try to buy a couple of books every week. This website will serve to document those purchases and provide a short review of each title.
I’m currently particularly interested in independently published mini-books and zines, so there will be a tendency to buy (and review) more of those than anything else. That said, I’m still keeping an...
